The scripts in:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts there are scripts that deal with the
hostname. In particular:
network-functions - sets the environment variable NEED_HOSTNAME
ifup - tries to set the host name if NEED_HOSTNAME is set using extra
agruments on pump
ifup-post - tries harder to set the hostname using a program called
ipcalc. This is the one we were missing.
This has nothing to do with firewall/NAT transation issues. In the case
of a node behind a NAT you need to ask the NAT 'who should I claim to
be'
Hope this helps,
